We love how craft can be a window into history and culture. This vintage sweet grass basket is reminiscent of the ones made by the Gullah, descendants of enslaved Africans that predominantly settled on the barrier islands of South Carolina. Slaves farming rice in the Lowcountry fields of Charleston found the materials needed to make baskets, similar to those in West Africa. Those material—sweetgrass, bulrush, pine needles, and palmetto palm—are the same ones used today! After the Civil War and emancipation, these former slaves began taking creative freedoms with their baskets, designing baskets for various functional and decorative purposes.
