Tazas Adelaida | Tumbler
Atzompa pottery and its clay tradition have fame and recognition in Oaxaca, Mexico, and internationally. This little town, located in the city limits of Oaxaca de Juárez, is home to the Martínez family and their workshop where their vision of the universe and their desire to share with the community are truly unique. It is clear that this family has a passion for working with clay, for their desire and mission is to bring back the appreciation and use of traditional clay pottery! We can find their symbolism in their work, in their motives, and in their relationship and respect for the land and ancestral Zapotec traditions, which are quite remarkable.
Brother and Sister Duo, Ana and Francisco Martinez, are master ceramicists from Santa Maria, Atzompa. They inherited their work from their family and have been working with clay since they were children. Using a traditional reduction and kiln firing technique, they are able to create artistic and daily-use pieces that have unique personalities and a beautifully smoked look.
The mysterious matte gray, somewhat metallic, color of the Martinez Family pieces, is an indicator that they are strong and more suitable for water (traditionally fired at 1050°C). However, some pieces contain unique markings or cracks in the interior glaze that occur randomly during the wood firing process due to the varying temperatures of the kiln. This is not considered a defect, but instead, they are unique striations created as a result of the firing process.
These drinking cups made of traditional black clay, are ideal for enjoying a good cup of water, tea or coffee. Or you can use them as a container for holding paintbrushes, pens, pencils and markers. Let your imagination run free with this lovely interior-glazed black clay cup!
