The Story:

Colectivo 1050 is a cooperative of potters from Oaxaca, Puebla and Chiapas in México. They offer simple and elegant hand crafted clay products, which combine the wisdom of tradition and the dynamism of innovation. The colors of 1050° are the colors of their land, of its rich geography of mountains and hillsides, its flavors, smells and textures. They are part of Innovando la Tradición, a social design, fair trade, and cultural development project.

The Artists:

The community of Santo Domingo Tonaltepec is still producing its pottery in the same way as in the pre-Hispanic period. Each piece is built by hand. These pottery pieces are among the few in the world that use vegetable pigments for decoration. The dark brown color of the stains is achieved when, upon pulling them out of the kiln, at a temperature close to 900°C, the artisans then splatter the pigment on the hot pottery. The liquid crackles by the evaporation of the water over the hot clay surface, and only the dark color of the tannins remains.

The Pieces:

This hand is hand made! with the traditional technique of Tonaltepec. In spite of not having a very specific function, it has been adopted by many in order to hold votives, mezcal cups, individual breads or small desserts. Let us know how you use them!
