Copa Ana | Face Cup
Atzompa pottery and its clay tradition have fame and recognition in Oaxaca, Mexico, and internationally. This little town, located in the city limits of Oaxaca de Juárez, is home to the Martínez family and their workshop where their vision of the universe and their desire to share with the community are truly unique. It is clear that this family has a passion for working with clay, for their desire and mission is to bring back the appreciation and use of traditional clay pottery! We can find their symbolism in their work, in their motives, and in their relationship and respect for the land and ancestral Zapotec traditions, which are quite remarkable.
Brother and Sister Duo, Anna and Francisco Martinez, are master ceramicists from Santa Maria, Atzompa. They inherited their work from their family and have been working with clay since they were children. Using a traditional reduction and kiln firing technique, they are able to create artistic and daily-use pieces that have unique personalities and a beautifully smoked look.
The mysterious matte gray, somewhat metallic, color of the Martinez Family pieces, is an indicator that they are strong and more suitable for water (traditionally fired at 1050°C). However, some pieces contain unique markings or cracks in the interior glaze that occur randomly during the wood firing process due to the varying temperatures of the kiln. This is not considered a defect, but instead, they are unique striations created as a result of the firing process.
These handsome little cups made by hand feature 'Caras' or faces, which are a rare pottery design feature exclusive to the Martinez Family. You can use the bowls for serving snacks, holding small miscellaneous items, or even turn them into a succulent plant pot! Whatever the use is, these sweet faces will provide the perfect piece of home decor in any space.
